First Day!

I woke up early (big shock, I know) around five thirty—but in all fairness it would have been about 730 at home, so that is pretty normal. I didn’t want to wake my roommate, so I just stayed put. When I did finally get out of bed I had a very lovely breakfast in the lobby and had a great conversation with the gift shop lady, who was only having a “fair day”. That made me sad so I talked with her about her life for about half an hour and gave her a hug. I hope the complications in her family do clear up some so she can relax and her health improves, so I said a quick prayer for her—and I’m doing so again now. I’m not usually all that “friendly” we’ll say, so this must have been a conversation I was meant to have. It has really stuck with me.

Denise (my hotel roommate) and I then decided to walk to Walmart (because there is always one close by) where we quickly bought provisions for the rest of the day (mostly water because DUDE the elevation is quite a change and it is seriously dry heat J LOVE the dry heat—it’s refreshing as compared to the humidity at home!). We spent the rest of the morning walking in Cortez (which took about half an hour…to walk most of the city…) then swam and waited for our ride to Crow Canyon.

The Archaeological center is A-mazing (not amazing, A-mazing)! We moved into our Hogan (pronounced ho-gon) and it’s pretty much civilized camping (Jennifer and Jessie, remember the Yurt? It’s a lot like that only it has actually walls not tent material (ergo less bugs)—I immediately thought of you as I was moving in. No air in here, but the rest of the campus has air so it’s only at night…J). I have two roommates who are both awesome. Marjie is from Seattle and she’s taught English and Social studies in Norway, China and Vietnam (!!!!—She’s pretty much my hero). Jan is from Tennessee. She drove here with her daughters (who are going on to other places in the west). She teaches art and has some amazing ideas—she just showed me some amazing music videos I think I’ll add to my repertoire. John Tesh and Meribol (Monument Valley).

We had a reception about 5…it was great because we finally met everyone, then ate dinner, and finally a group of us went on a short hike around the campus—saw some great animals! Mule deer are EVERYWHERE, jack rabbits jumping on the path, and I took solace in the fact that I think the mountain lions will go after that game first (we can hope so at least haha). We sat around a pretend campfire—can’t have a real one because the fire hazards are way high apparently, and then I took a quick shower and came back to the Hogan to talk for a while with my roomies.

Tomorrow is kind of a chill day. It honestly feels a little surreal. I’m thinking all my friends and family need to pack up, okay, cause I’m going to buy some land in the subdivision across the street that includes an archaeological site on your property! Ah! Of course, that’s after I have the multi-millions it would cost to purchase a thing like that…Lottery ticket maybe? Adam, Jennifer and I did see lightening strike the other night and apparently winning the lottery is more likely so I’m feeling lucky! J

  2. It was fun. And I never saw that lady again, which still makes me a little sad. She had quite a hard life and our conversation still sticks with me now. I think it is good for us all to encourage one another even if it is just a stranger in a check out line. What do you think? The archaeological center is pretty amazing and if you are truly interested, they have an awesome summer camp for high school students. I have all the info, feel free to ask me about it sometime. The have two opportunities: a one week camp and a 3 week field study. Both are pretty amanzing I hear. Why is your family so keen to discuss archaological centers? Do you have some archaeologists in your family?

  3. Hello Ms. Carmichael! again extremely jealous! What is a mule deer exactly? whats the difference between them and the deers around here? I hope that's not a stupid question (haha). Marji sounds awesome by the way! One of my dreams is to travel all over the world. The farthest place i have been is to Florida but even then i can barely remember it.

  4. Mule deer are apparently less pretty than our deer as we have mostly white tail around here. According to tue venison experts the real difference is in the taste but if you're not a venison fan that would mean very little haha. Marjie is the greates and I feel amazingly lucky to have known her. I am even hoping to pay her a visit in Seattle sometime soon!
